This commemorative postage stamp was issued in October 1965 by Sudan to mark the first anniversary of the October 21 Revolution of 1964. The revolution was a pivotal popular uprising led by university students, civil society groups, and trade unions that successfully overthrew the military regime of General Ibrahim Abboud. By releasing a dedicated commemorative stamp, the transitional civilian government sought to institutionalize national memory, honoring the sacrifices that restored constitutional governance, judicial independence, and democratic freedoms across the country. The issue pays tribute to Ahmed al-Gurashi (أحمد القرشي), a student at the University of Khartoum whose tragic death during a police raid on a student political forum on October 21, 1964, acted as the immediate catalyst for the nation-wide general strike and political demonstrations. By honoring al-Gurashi as the primary martyr (al-Shahid) of the movement, the postal issue commemorated the decisive historic transition from military rule to democratic governance.
