Imam El Siddig el Mahdi (1911-1961) - 15 millim
This memorial commemorative stamp was issued in 1961 by Sudan to honor one of the nation's most prominent religious, spiritual, and political figures. Releasing dedicated commemorative issues for national leaders allowed the postal service to mark moments of collective national mourning while underscoring pivotal figures in Sudan's journey through independence and constitutional development. The issue was released to mark the passing of Imam El-Siddig El-Mahdi (1911–1961), who served as the leader (Imam) of the influential Ansar movement and President of the Umma Party. As the grandson of Muhammad Ahmad (the Mahdi), El-Siddig played a central role in guiding Sudanese politics through the crucial transition period leading up to and following independence in 1956, advocating for civilian parliamentary democracy and national sovereignty.
