UNESCO campaign to conserve Nubian monuments - 55 millim
Issued in 1964, this stamp was part of Sudan’s contribution to the UNESCO International Campaign to Save the Monuments of Nubia, a major global effort launched in response to the construction of the Aswan High Dam. The project threatened numerous ancient temples, churches, and archaeological sites in Nubia, prompting an unprecedented international preservation campaign to document, relocate, and protect these monuments from flooding.
By participating in the campaign through a commemorative stamp issue, Sudan highlighted the historical and cultural importance of Nubia and supported international cooperation in safeguarding humanity’s shared heritage. The issue emphasized the value of preserving archaeological treasures for future generations and recognized the worldwide effort that helped rescue many of the region’s most significant monuments.
